My wife and I began talking about living full time in our RV. As most conversations it began with where we want to travel, what do we want to see, how long to stay in each location, and well you get the idea. With that initial conversation we started with what is our thoughts, how can we let our readers know how and what we are really thinking, and we came up with this. The destination is where we want to go, everything in between is our adventure. The next decision is what do we want to see and do. Oh, that was easy, Everything. Ok well maybe that was just too broad. With being an Army Veteran, having a father that was a US History teacher and being in the American Legion, anything with a historical aspect has been and will always be of interest to me, but what about my wife (I have to make sure she is interested in those also). Jackpot she wants to see and learn about anything with history. We have been finding out that there is a lot of history all you have to do is keep your eyes and ears open and not be in such a hurry to get somewhere. So here it is, wherever our destination is it will still be there in a couple of days. That is the key to our adventures, we are not afraid to stop and smell the roses. If that means we travel 10 miles today it is good, because it is the great adventure that counts. So, one of our big questions was, with being in an RV you just can’t travel to some of the sites. How do we get around that obstacle? Here is how we have enjoyed many out of the way places that are incredibly difficult to navigate with an RV. Stop in an RV park and then search what is 100 miles around it (however if you are like my wife and I, this has been done before we even reserve an RV site). In doing it this way you are able to make your travels even more enjoyable. This is totally meaning you need to have a tow vehicle, (if you are in a Class A Motorhome, if you have a bumper pull or a 5th wheel you have your vehicle to excursions). Remember it is about the Adventure, spending time enjoying the company of your spouse and those you meet on the road is always worth the time. You will be surprised at what you can find by spending a month at a location and then the upside also is that most times the price is drastically reduced. Yay more money for more adventures. This way you are not kicking yourself when you are traveling down the road and see that sign 25 miles away and think if I would have only known about this place it looks interesting. Of course you can always go back to our philosophy, it is about the adventure not the destination. What are next, National Parks are filled with exciting stuff to do, so always plan on more than a day or two. If not, you are likely to be kicking yourself for not having the time to see more of the sights. The more time in these locations is always worth it. Remember some of these parks are definitely out of the way. Also, there are many other Historical locations along the way such as National Monuments, Battlefields, Forts, ok just about anything of interest (let your adventures guide you).
Next, Vineyards, Breweries and Distilleries, most of these places have an interesting history and if you are a Harvest Host member they are well worth the overnight stays many of them offer (if you are interested in finding out more about Harvest Host, visit their website at www.harvesthost.com or download the app and if you want to help is use this code ). We are also visiting the oldest drinking establishment in each state. One of the interesting aspects is how did they fair and were able to stay open during prohibition, (January 17th, 1920 to December 5th, 1933).
Through talking there developed one more objective my wife and I would like to accomplish and that is to work on and develop a non-profit to benefit the beautification of military gravesites, points of interest and historical markers, (there will be much to research and learn concerning this endeavor). For the beginning it will be basic weed eating, picking up trash and notifying the proper agency of the condition of each location. To continue the projects, we will be reaching out to local American Legion Posts, VFW Posts, Scouts, 4H… you get the idea to; this will help to keep the cleanliness of these sites. You may be asking yourself how this all came about. Well, the short story (for now) is, talking to the American Legion Post I belong to in Carlin, Nevada about a gravesite called “Maidens Grave” in Beowawee, Nevada and the possibility of cleaning it up and another gravesite in Palisade, Nevada (I will be writing about this adventure later).
Hopefully I have piqued your interest, and you will decide to follow our adventures and maybe learn something along the way. Until then… (oh for those that have seen the movie “Mama Mia” the … does not mean what it meant in the movie).
Happy and Safe Travels,
Lincoln and Leslie
